New Holiday Traditions To Start This Year

December 5, 2022 by Writers Leave a Comment

We’ve officially kicked off the holiday season! It is always the best because while it may be the one of the coldest times of the year, it can leave your heart feeling the warmest it has felt all year. A big piece of those warm, fuzzy feelings is the traditions your family does every holiday season.

Does your family have holiday traditions you do annually? If not, don’t fret! Or if you’re looking for more traditions to make your own, we have your back! Here are 3 new holiday traditions we think your family should start this year:

Host a holiday movie marathon

Your holiday movie marathon can be a long, one day event or a month long series where you watch one movie on a certain day of each week. You can let everyone pick their favorite movie or randomly draw one out of a Santa hat. The best part of making the tradition is creating the rules!

Having a movie marathon is also a great time to test out some new holiday cookies. Found a cookie recipe you may want to bake for your neighbors? A movie marathon night is the best time to get the whole family to do a taste test.

Volunteer locally for someone in need

Remember the season isn’t just about gifts! Take time to give back to your local community. Some ideas your family can do are collect canned foods, pass out holiday dinners, or clean up a neighbor’s yard.

Take a family trip to Skate Moore

Make a holiday annual trip to skate with us at Skate Moore. You can wear some tacky sweaters, funny holiday hats, or come in your best holiday onesie! If you want to extend this new tradition to your extended family, you can even rent out the rink for a private party! Now that is a fun holiday party!

We’d love to know what new traditions your family starts this holiday season! Be sure to let us know next time you hit the rink at Skate Moore.

When (+ How) To Replace Your Roller Skate Wheels

October 31, 2022 by Writers Leave a Comment

Is it time to change your roller skate wheels? How do you know when to replace them? Also, how do you even replace roller skate wheels? We have you covered! Keep reading this blog to learn more about when to know it’s time to replace your roller skate wheels and how to do it!

When It’s Time To Change Out Roller Skate Wheels

There are a good many ways that you can tell the wheels on your skates need to be replaced. Maybe they’re making a thudding noise or you feel uneven wear. Both of these typically mean your skate wheels need to be replaced. If your wheels feel like they aren’t rolling as smoothly, it most likely also means that it’s time to replace them. Your wheels should roll as well as they did the first few skates, and if they don’t you should change the wheels.

You may not know this, but roller skate wheels can wear differently based on which wheel it is on the skate, as well as what kind of skating you do. Certain roller sports like jam skating, roller derby, speed skating, and more can put more wear on your wheels. So you may have to change them more frequently if you do those kinds of skating.

How To Replace Your Roller Skate Wheels

The wheels are imperative to roller skating because that’s what keeps you on the rink! Be sure to keep them in good condition and regularly maintain them. By following these 5 easy steps, you’ll have new wheels on your skates in a flash:

Loosen the axle nut or screw

You’ll want to first loosen the axle nut or screw. Remember, lefty loosey! Continue loosening until you can remove the nut or axle bolt.

Remove the wheels

Next, you’ll want to carefully remove the wheel. Make sure you leave everything else ready to put the new wheel into it.

Fit the new wheels in the axel

You’ll want to clean the axle and then fit the new wheels in. Be sure they are lined up properly and facing the right way before you tighten them.

Attach the wheel and tighten them

Once you know they’re in there properly, it’s time to tighten them back up. Remember, righty tighty! Be careful to not overdo it and damage the axle.

Test the new wheels

Before you take them for a spin on your feet, be sure to test them on the ground and roll them around. Make sure they roll freely, but the wheel is still stable within the axle.

Once your new skates are tested and ready to go, come by Skate Moore to take them for a spin on our rink!

The Benefits Of After-School Skating

August 29, 2022 by Writers Leave a Comment

School is back in session! That means it is time to find some activities to do during the weekday evenings with your kids. Though we may be biased, we highly recommend taking your kids roller skating after school! There are several benefits of taking your kids skating after the school day is over.

Here are our 3 favorite benefits of taking the kids roller skating after school:

Bye-bye Boredom!

When kids go straight home after the school day is over, they typically go straight to the television or their video games before diving into homework. They may stare at a screen for hours with nothing to look forward to until school the next day. However, having a schedule for after-school skating can get them excited to get their homework completed to be able to skate!

Find Your Focus!

When kids have an evening activity it can help them sleep better at night. The better they sleep, the better they focus in school the next day! Keeping your kids active in the evenings can help their performance throughout the next school day.

Make New Friends!

Taking your children somewhere outside of school on a regular basis gives them a place to meet new people and make new friends! School can be a hard place for some kids, however the skating rink can give them a place to make some lifelong friends.

Beat the after-school blues on the rink. We’d love to have you skating with us at Skate Moore! We reopen on Thursday, September 8th and would love to see you here. You can check out our hours here!

The Best Snacks To Fuel Your Skate Session!

July 28, 2022 by Writers Leave a Comment

Time to fuel up! When it’s time for another skate session, what snacks are you reaching for? Great snack choices can help you have a better skating experience by:

  • Providing energy.
  • Supplying fluids for hydration to keep the body cool.
  • Providing nutrients.
  • Promoting recovery after exercise.

Instead of reaching for candy or stopping in at a drive thru, consider including these 3 in your snack routine for your next skate session:

Chocolate Milk 🍫

Chocoholics, rejoice! Chocolate milk has actually become a go-to part of any post-workout meal for athletes because it has a 4 to 1 ratio of carbohydrates to proteins. It is also packed with vitamins! It’s ideal to drink chocolate milk between 30 to 45 minutes after you do any other type of physical activity to maximize the benefits.

Oranges 🍊

Oranges have been the favorite halftime snack of soccer basically since the start of the sport. They bring a quick boost of energy with their natural sugar, and also give Vitamin C and hydration boosts. They’re also a great source of potassium, which means they’re a good snack for fueling your time on the skating rink!

Bananas 🍌

Bananas offer many of the same benefits of oranges! You can also spruce them up by adding peanut butter, fruit butter, or a protein. Bananas are an instant energy boost with plenty of potassium. They also have a decent bit of magnesium in them. Magnesium loss can cause cramps, weakness, and muscle twitching, so it’s best to keep that magnesium level up when exercising.

Picking out the best snacks to fuel any kind of activity can be difficult, but it’s important to choose wisely so you feel your best out on the rink and as you recover! If you’re in Moore, Oklahoma, we’d love to see you on the rink at Skate Moore. Check out our summer hours and pricing!

What Are Toe Stops (And Why Do You Need Them?)

June 17, 2022 by Writers Leave a Comment

There are so many different parts of a roller skate and sometimes it’s hard to keep up with what does what! Keep reading to learn more about what toe stops are and why you need them!

What are toe stops?

Toe stops are typically found on the front of both quad skates. While recreational inline skates will have a brake on the back of one skate.

Toe stops are designed to slow down while roller skating. In some styles of skating toe stops can actually also be used for faster take offs. There are two types of toe stops, fixed and adjustable.

Fixed or bolt on toe stops can come in different shapes, sizes, and in many different colors. They are made with a small hole in the center where a bolt or screw is inserted and directly connects to the plate. The hole goes all the way through to the bolt on the toe stop. They cannot be set to different heights.

Adjustable toe stops come in a lot of color options and sizes as well. What makes them different from fixed toe stops is that adjustable can be set at different heights. They have an attached bolt that screws into the plate. Some stops will offer different options for how long the bolt is, so if you have a preference you can pick.

Why do you need them?

So, that leads us to why do you need them? Having toe stops is like having breaks on a car. If we didn’t have breaks on our car, could we slow down, sure eventually. However, breaks speed up the process of slowing down. That’s exactly what toe stops do! They make it easier for us to stop while roller skating.

We hope this better explains what toe stops are and why you need them. We can’t wait to see how you use your toe stops on the Skate Moore rink!

Which Roller Skating Wheels Are Right For You?

April 20, 2022 by Writers Leave a Comment

There are many different types of roller skating, but there are even more types of skate wheels. There are wheels with certain types of skating in mind, and there are some that are more generic. It’s important to choose the right wheels for you with the kind of skating you enjoy doing! There are 3 main categories of wheel differences that we suggest you look into before purchasing a new set of wheels:

Size

There can be differences in the outer width and height of wheels. The other measurements of the wheel are height and width. These are measured in millimeters (mm). If you skate a certain style, it’s a good idea to check with other skaters that skate the same style to see what they prefer. Typically, this can be a good guide for you!

Wheels can also come in several heights. Large wheel skates make it easier to maintain a speed, but smaller wheels are better for quick movement. It may take a little experiment to decide which height is best for you and your skating style!

Hardness

Wheel hardness is also referred to as the grip level. It is listed as a number with an A behind it. The higher the number, the harder the wheel is and the less grip it has. A high hardness with virtually no group would be 103A.

For outdoor skating, a softer wheel is needed. Your softer wheels will absorb more shock as you roll over cracks and any small debris. Most outdoor skaters look for wheel hardness around 78A.

Hubs

The 2 main styles of hubs are nylon and aluminum. Nylon is a lighter material and is most common in skate wheels. Aluminum is a bit more sturdier, so will have less give to it. If you find yourself changing your wheels frequently and getting annoyed by it, it may be time to invest in some aluminum hubs.

We hope these tips help you choose the best roller skating wheels for you! We can’t wait to see your wheels hitting the rink with us at Skate Moore!

Is It Time To Buy Your Own Pair Of Skates?

March 21, 2022 by Writers Leave a Comment

To buy, or not to buy? Typically, there comes a time in any skater’s life when they have to ask themselves that question.  And typically, that answer will almost always be a huge “BUY!” Renting roller skating rinks every time you visit the rink isn’t that expensive individually, it does add up quickly over time. If you love to skate, you’ll certainly get your money’s worth and your investment will pay off!

Pros of buying your own roller skates

Saving money is definitely a huge pro of having your own pair of skates since you will no longer need to pay the rental fee each time you come to skate! Another pro is you can find specialized skates that fit the way you like to skate. You can also express your personal style with your skates! Skates offer so many options for customizations that you can create your own unique pair of roller skates.

How to choose which roller skates to buy

There are several factors you should consider when choosing which pair of roller skates to buy. First, think about what type of skating you enjoy. Are you into dance skating or are you a speed demon? Do you want to learn how to own the rink? Or do you dream of playing roller derby? Skating is a sport, and just like any other sport you need specialized gear. The type of skating you plan to do will heavily inform what type of skates you should buy.

If you need some assistance on selecting your new roller skates, we’re here to help! Give us a call, shop our online store, or swing by and see us in person during an open skating session. Can’t wait to see you on the rink in your new skates soon!
