Roller Skating: Starting from Scratch

February 5, 2016 by Zach Sanders Leave a Comment

Welcome to the wild and wonderful world of roller skating! Skating may seem to be a scary thing to overcome at first, but once you have obtained a solid foundation of skills, it’s a synch. So, you’ve already seen the rink, and a crowd of roller skaters having a great time. What’s next? Skate Moore in Moore, Ok wants to help you on your roller skating journey. Check out these tips for skating beginners.

What will you need? blackboard

  • Obviously, in order to roller skate, you need the skates. But since you are a first timer, some safety equipment is a great tool to have while you’re learning. Elbow pads, knee pads and a helmet will help keep you protected while you’re getting the hang of things.

When your skates hit the rink

  • You’re all geared up, so now it’s time for the fun part! Before you start rolling around the rink, and doing tricks, you need to know the basics.
    • Place your feet shoulder width apart.
    • Bend you knees and squat slightly. This will give you a bit more spring, and aid your balance.
    • Find a sweet spot with this general stance that you feel comfortable with.
  • You’ve got the stance down, now let’s get moving!
    • To start rolling around the rink, position your toes outward and your heels inward.
    • Practice walking like this until you find your balance. You may fall a few times trying to get it just right, but that’s what the pads are for! After a while, you will gain more confidence and be well on your way.
    • Start to move your feet more quickly, and take longer strides.
    • Begin to push off harder with one foot while you glide on the other. Glide farther and farther distances

Look, you’re roller skating! It’s always a great idea to take someone with you that has previous experience to help get you up to speed.

Rink Closed? Try These Roller Skating Activities!

January 22, 2016 by Zach Sanders Leave a Comment

When you have that itch to go roller skating, no other activity will do. Trust us, we feel your pain! roller hockeyUnfortunately, the rink can’t be open all day, every day. And there aren’t many things we can think of that top gliding across a smooth wooden rink on a pair of skates, but there are more things to do on eight wheels than you may think! In fact, there are many different activities that can be done on roller skates that you don’t necessarily need a rink for. When Skate Moore, in Moore, Oklahoma, isn’t open give these activities a try!

Roller Skating Games

  • Roller Tag – A cul de sac is a great place for this one! Roller tag is played exactly like regular tag, but we all know everything is made better with a pair of roller skates. This is a really fun way to turn your skating experience up a few notches!
  • Musical Chairs on Skates – Do you have a level driveway or surface to skate on? Well, this game is a fun one to play! We all remember playing musical chairs as kids, but not many of us tried it on skates! Much like traditional musical chairs, but in the skating version there are marked areas on the ground instead of chairs that show where to claim a spot.
  • Roller Hockey – Take away the ice and ice skates, and replace it with pavement or a wood floor and roller skates! Roller hockey is a great way for hockey lovers to play at any time they want, without having to make their way to an ice rink.
  • Limbo – How low can you go? If you have mastered the art of limbo, crank up the difficulty a bit and throw on some skates.

Holiday Roller Skate Guide

December 11, 2015 by Zach Sanders Leave a Comment

The countdown to the holidays have begun! With each passing day we grow closer and closer to time with our families, holiday feasts, parties and everyone’s favorite…the presents! This season is all about giving, but finding that perfect gift to give to your family and holiday gifts friends can sometimes prove to be a difficult undertaking. If you are in search of something for that roller skater on your list, there is no better gift than a new pair of skates! Not all roller skates are created equal, however. It all depends on a matter of preference and skating style as to which ones are best suited for an individual. Which one works for your friend or family member?

  • Quad Skate – This skate is the most widely used out of the two. These are best suited for an indoor roller rink and not outdoors. When you want some rink time, this is the skate for you! Quad skates come in two different types.
    • Traditional – These tend to have a boot that comes up over the ankle, which offers a bit more support if necessary.
    • Speed – These skates are situated right at, or below the ankle. This offers a bit more flexibility in the turns but less support. The boot is fits more like a sneaker than a traditional quad.
  • Inline Skate – Like the name states, an inline skate has the wheels situated in a straight row. This skate is geared more towards the outdoors and an uneven skating surface. Play roller hockey or roll around the skate park? This is just what the doctor ordered!

Once you decide which skate is the best fit for the gift, visit our Proshop, here at Skate Moore in Moore, Oklahoma, and we’ll get you set up with the perfect pair!
