When to Rent Vs. When to Buy Skates

August 2, 2018 by Writers Leave a Comment

roller skatesIf Skate Moore in Moore, Oklahoma, is becoming one of your weekly or even daily go-to spots, it might be time to consider making the switch from rental skates to owning your own! But even if you don’t skate every week, you shouldn’t overlook the benefits of owning skates. Check out a few of our guidelines to know when it’s time to buy versus when renting will do just fine.

When to Rent Skates

Obviously, beginners should take advantage of our skate rentals, but there are some other good reasons to keep renting as well. Picking up rental skates is a great way to feel out the perfect fit. Skates that are too big or too small can cause all kinds of problems. So, before you buy, make sure you get your size dialed in by renting a few different pairs of skates.

Figuring out the type of skate that you want is also important. At our pro shop, you’ll find everything from speed skates to roller derby styles and everything in between. Take some time to experience the different styles of skating with rentals and then move onto making the right purchase!

It’s Time to Buy!

Having your own pair of skates will take your time at the rink to the next level. There’s really nothing quite like having skates that fit your feet perfectly and no matter what your skating style is, you’ll do better in skates that you own.

If you skate once a month or more, it’s definitely worth investing in a pair of your own. Buying not only ensures you’ll have the perfect fit for your foot every time you roll out onto the hardwoods, but it’ll also save you money in the long run. Renting roller or inline skates from us at Skate Moore isn’t too costly, but it can add up over time.

If you’re going to get into roller derby, racing, or inline street skating, you will definitely want to purchase a custom-fitted pair of skates, too. Luckily, we stock all the styles, brands and sizes you need right here at our pro shop! Roll by and find your perfect fit today at Skate Moore in Moore, Oklahoma.

The Incredible History of Roller Skating

June 6, 2018 by Writers Leave a Comment

roller skatesDid you know that roller skates have been around for 275 years? That means roller skating was invented even before America declared independence! With such a unique history, we thought you should know some of the highlights of the history of roller skating:

  • 1743 – Imagine going to a theatre performance and watching an actor stride onto the stage in wheels. This was the case for many theatre-goers in London, England, who were watching a stage performance. Although the inventor of this skate is unknown, it is the first recorded use of skates.
  • 1760 – Seventeen years after roller skates shocked many theatre-goers, John Joseph Merlin created inline skates. He wore them himself while attending a masquerade party!
  • 1819 – Mr. Petitbled was the first to patent the roller skate design. They may look similar to the inline skates we use today, but its maneuverability and comfortability were non-existent. Skaters could only skate in a straight line! Fortunately for us, many decades were spent in the 1800’s to improve the design.
  • 1857 – London wowed the world again by opening the first public skating rinks. Skates had come a long way from their initial appearance on a London stage over a century earlier.
  • 1863 – An American man, James Leonard Plimpton, designed the quad skate, which was much like the skate we know today. Public skating rinks opened with intensity as more and more people enjoyed this newfound hobby.
  • 1876 – The toe stop was patented! You likely use your toe stop while skating at Skate Moore in Moore, Oklahoma. This is an easy way for skaters to stop on a dime, if needed.
  • 1902 – Skating at Skate Moore is a popular activity to do in the summertime, but can you imagine skating with 7,000 people at once?! When the Chicago Coliseum opened its first skating rink in 1902, over 7,000 people attended opening night!
  • 1983 – We think skating is pretty cool and so did President Ronald Reagan. He declared October to be National Roller Skating Month in 1983.
  • 1993 – Active Brake Technology was invented in 1993 to increase safety for all skaters. (Thanks Rollerblade, Inc.!)

Since roller skates first debuted in 1743, huge strides have been made to make them comfortable, maneuverable, and safe. At Skate Moore, we love seeing new and advanced skaters at the rink. So, check out our summer schedule and head to the rink today for some fun!

How to Choose Between Inline Skates & Quad Skates

May 16, 2018 by Writers Leave a Comment

rollerbladesAre you taking up roller skating as your go-to hobby? Good choice! This activity has incredible health benefits and it’s extremely fun! But, you’re probably wondering which skates you should choose – inline or quad? Before you make your decision, check out the details of quad skates and inline skates:

Quad Skates

Quad skates are better known as roller skates, and you’ve probably seen people skating in them at the roller rink or in Hollywood movies. Roller skates provide immense stability. If balancing is difficult for you, you’ll want to start out roller skating on quads. They help riders even out their center of gravity and allow for a smooth ride. It’s important to note that quads aren’t known for their speed. You likely won’t be racing through the park or whipping around tight corners in roller skates. But, nevertheless, quads are a great option to choose when you first start roller skating.

Inline Skates

Inline skates, or rollerblades as many people call them, are great for speed and maneuverability. If you’re about to skate for the first time and you choose inlines, you may have a hard time; but it’s not impossible. You may want to practice first on a smooth surface with little or no obstacles blocking your path. Make sure you wear protective gear such as a helmet, elbow pads, knee pads, and wrist guards. This will ensure your safety if you fall.

Whether you’re a rollerblader or rollerskater, visit Skate Moore today! Check out our schedule, invite your friends and family, and get skating!

Keep Your Balance on the Skate Floor

April 5, 2018 by Writers Leave a Comment

Balance is an important part of roller skating, and that can trip some people up. While skating will help improve your balance, it’s hard to get started if you can’t keep your feet! That’s why Skate Moore Skate Center has put together some tips to improve your balance while skating.

First of all, start small: stand on one foot for a few minutes, then switch to the other foot. Really, that’s it! This little exercise is surprisingly effective and can be done almost anywhere. You can stand on one foot while brushing your teeth, packing lunches, waiting on the bus, or whenever it’s safe (not while using sharp objects, please). If you’re already doing yoga, you know tree pose works on the same principle. You’ll find the muscles of your legs and core getting stronger as they work to keep you upright, which will translate directly into the skating rink.

Before you go skating, warm up a bit. Walk briskly or even jog for five to ten minutes to get your muscles warm and limber, and they’ll react better to exercise. You’ll be less prone to falling and other injuries, such as muscle strain, that way.

And of course, practice! The more you do it, the better you’ll get at it. Daily practice is your best bet, but even a few times a week will benefit your balance tremendously. Check out the open hours at Skate Moore and join us for the most fun you’ll have while also working on your athleticism!

Why High-Top Roller Skates are the Style for You

March 19, 2018 by Writers Leave a Comment

roller skatesAre you looking to add more fun to your life? Fun is important because it decreases stress and anxiety, and it increases your overall health! Having fun and looking good go hand-in-hand. That’s why the team at Skate Moore suggests purchasing high-top roller skates to kick your skating style up a notch!

Check out a few reasons why purchasing high-top roller skates are well worth the investment.

You’ll Be Extremely Comfortable

When you do an activity you love, it’s important to be comfortable. Nobody wants to roller-skate with pinched toes and blisters forming. High-top roller skates are a great fit for all feet, they’re made of quality material, and they give you the support you need to try new tricks.

Your Ankles Will Thank You

One of the worst feelings in the world is a rolled ankle. It makes it hard to walk, run, stand, and skate. But when you wear high-top roller skates, your ankles have the support they need to make those sharp turns and go fast! You won’t have to worry about rolling your ankle if you’re wearing the correct size skate.

You’ll Look Like a Million Bucks

With high-top rollers, you get to be comfortable and fashionable! There’s not much that says cool like roller skating on the rink with high-tops. The Skate Moore team suggests you wear thick and high socks to prevent uncomfortable blisters from forming.

Now that you understand exactly why having high-top roller skates is well worth it, you can purchase a pair right now! We have all different colors, wheel options, and more. We look forward to seeing you rock out your new high-tops on the skating floor. See you soon!
