Holiday Roller Skate Guide

December 11, 2015 by Zach Sanders Leave a Comment

The countdown to the holidays have begun! With each passing day we grow closer and closer to time with our families, holiday feasts, parties and everyone’s favorite…the presents! This season is all about giving, but finding that perfect gift to give to your family and holiday gifts friends can sometimes prove to be a difficult undertaking. If you are in search of something for that roller skater on your list, there is no better gift than a new pair of skates! Not all roller skates are created equal, however. It all depends on a matter of preference and skating style as to which ones are best suited for an individual. Which one works for your friend or family member?

  • Quad Skate – This skate is the most widely used out of the two. These are best suited for an indoor roller rink and not outdoors. When you want some rink time, this is the skate for you! Quad skates come in two different types.
    • Traditional – These tend to have a boot that comes up over the ankle, which offers a bit more support if necessary.
    • Speed – These skates are situated right at, or below the ankle. This offers a bit more flexibility in the turns but less support. The boot is fits more like a sneaker than a traditional quad.
  • Inline Skate – Like the name states, an inline skate has the wheels situated in a straight row. This skate is geared more towards the outdoors and an uneven skating surface. Play roller hockey or roll around the skate park? This is just what the doctor ordered!

Once you decide which skate is the best fit for the gift, visit our Proshop, here at Skate Moore in Moore, Oklahoma, and we’ll get you set up with the perfect pair!

How to Perform Roller Skate Maintenance

What’s better than hitting the rink with a well functioning and smooth pair of skates?? Here, at Skate Moore in Moore, Oklahoma, we can’t think of anything! A smooth roll doesn’t come without a little maintenance. If you chase after that great skate like we do, there are some basics you need to pay attention to when owning your own pair.

First Things First

Upon buying a new pair of skates, there are a few things to address before lacing up.

  • Check the wheels. Make sure they feel solid and not loose. If they do, you may need to tighten the nuts on the wheels a little bit.
  • Adjust the toe stop to a height that is comfortable to you.
  • Make sure the trucks are secured firmly to the roller skate.

Post-skate Checklist

Every time you act on that urge to skate, check a few things afterwards.

  • Have the wheels of your roller skates become loose? If so, be sure to tighten them to avoid it being dangerous.
  • If you rolled through a puddle or spilled drink, check to see if your bearings are wet afterwards. They WILL rust if left alone. Dry the skates with a rag and clean any muck accumulated with rubbing alcohol.

Additional Skate Maintenance

  • If your ride isn’t as smooth as it was, it’s is time to check the bearings. It might just need a little added lubrication.
  • Take your skates apart and clean them. This means removing the bearings, because if you are using dish soap it can damage them. So, clean the skate and once it is dry replace the bearings.
  • If those are a smelling a little funky, odors can be removed. Sprinkle some baking soda inside the skates and leave the insole out in the sun to dry out. This should eliminate the smell.

If you pay attention to the care of your roller skates, they can last for years to come. If you are looking to give your freshly maintained skates a spin, come visit us in the rink!
