Can Exercise Make Us Happy?

August 5, 2016 by Zach Sanders Leave a Comment

Is it August already? The summer has flown by and the school year is gearing up to start. Often woman smiling times, this point in the year prompts some end-of-the-summer blues that can be hard to shake. But this year let’s take a moment to focus on staying happy because it just so happens to be Happiness Happens Month! This month is all about focusing on being cheerful and embracing the things that help us stay that way. Did you know that studies show an increase in levels of happiness with regular exercise? Maybe that’s why roller skating puts a smile on all of our faces! Take a look at the science behind what physical activity does to our happiness!

  • Short Term Happiness – Studies have shown that just 20 minutes of exercise and physical activity can boost ones mood for up to 12 hours after.
  • Endorphins – When we head to the gym (or better yet, head to the rink) and get some activity in, our feel-good brain chemicals (endorphins) are increased.
  • Turn that Frown Upside Down – Most of us are more prone to workout when we are in a better mood. But if we exercise while we’re feeling a little blue, the effects on our mental state are the most powerful.
  • Destress – Exercise is a wonderful way to decompress and calm the nerves. Many people gravitate toward unhealthy habits, such as over-eating, to cope, but exercise is much healthier and more effective tool for managing stress, anxiety and depression.

Need a little happiness in your life? Make your way down to Skate Moore Skate Center in Moore, Oklahoma and skate your way to a happier you! Check out our hours!

Roller Sports: The Fight to Compete

July 29, 2016 by Zach Sanders Leave a Comment

The 2016 Olympic Games are gearing up in Rio de Janeiro with the opening ceremonies slatedSpeed Skating to commence on August 5th. The games attract billions of people, world-wide, to their television screens to observe their favorite events and cheer on their country’s athletes. While many viewers have their favorite sports to look forward to, there are many others who’s sports are excluded. Many of our skaters, here, in the rink are part of the many who feel their sports are left out of their opportunity to go for the gold. We are, of course, talking specifically about roller sports. For many years, the roller sports community has been fighting for a chance to represent their countries in the Olympic Games, but always seems to fall short. While it has not yet been a featured event in the games, the possibility of it being so in the future exists! Here’s why roller sports could potentially become an Olympic event in the future.

  1. A candidate much first apply anti-doping measures outside of competition to be eligible for consideration. This must be in accordance with the established and recognized regulations of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
  2. Next, a sport must be organized into an international federation that can then apply for contention on behalf of the sport.
  3. If this criteria is met, the sport must then have a certain number of participants in many countries. The exact specifications are male participants in at least 75 countries on four continents and female participants in at least 40 countries on three continents.
  4. Ranked events must be observed.
  5. The sport must hold championships on an international level outside of the Olympics.
  6. Physicality in the sport is mandatory. The sport must involve a physical means of propulsion, not mechanical.

If all of these criteria are met, the IOC then takes a vote on whether or not to recognize the sport. But recognition doesn’t necessarily mean a sure spot. Roller sports (specifically, inline speed skating) has been recognized by the committee since 2005, but has never fully made it into the games. It takes considerable and persistent lobbying on the part of the sport to help it shine out above the rest of the sports.

So it’s all up to the lobbying and passion of the athletes now! As skaters, you can spread the word as much as you can, and sign any petition you come across on the subject. Here’s to hoping we see our beloved sport in future games!

Earn Money for your Child’s School in the Rink!

July 15, 2016 by Zach Sanders Leave a Comment

The start of the school year is drawing nearer and nearer. Parents and children are rushingSchool Red Door around making last minute preparations and supply runs to ensure a successful first week back. More often than not, the roller rink is thought of as a way to have a fun time outside of the school walls, but what if we told you that roller skating could help raise money for your school?? Well, with the Healthy Lifestyle Skating Program, you can do just that!

What is the Healthy Lifestyle Skating Program?

  • This program, which is promoted by the Roller Skating Association, is a way for your elementary school student to raise money for their school just by hitting the rink! From 2013-2014 we raised over $5,100 for OKC schools.

How it works?

  • Contact us, and sign up your school (We will need the number of students for all schools that participate).
  • We will provide you with custom flyers and posters with your school name and all of the skate dates.
  • It will only be a small fee of $3 to skate with the HLS Skating Program. It is held on:
    • Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 6-9pm
    • Thursdays from  7-9pm
  • The child can bring friends and family with them, and each additional person is worth $1 for the school, and still only pay the $3 fee! The more the merrier, because the more people you bring the more money your school receives!
  • Your school should make announcements of when the events are being held. The more people are aware, the more money the school will receive.

We will mail a check to your organization the day after your Skate Night with all the money you earned! The school is not responsible for the children or any monetary amount for this program.

The Endless Quest for a Perfect Skate Requires Just a Little Maintenance

July 8, 2016 by Zach Sanders Leave a Comment

When the rink is smooth and the skates are rolling smoother, there isn’t anything much better in wrenchthis world! Here, at Skate Moore in Moore, OK, we couldn’t agree more with this statement, and we find ourselves in a constant quest for that perfect roll. But without a little effort from the skate now and then, that sought-after skate will never come. Our job is to keep the rink as smooth as possible, but without a little effort from the skater, those skates won’t function optimally. If you are in an endless quest for that great skate, here are some things to pay attention to with your roller skates.

First Things First

Upon buying a new pair of skates, there are a few things to address before lacing up.

  • Check the wheels. Make sure they feel solid and not loose. If they do, you may need to tighten the nuts on the wheels a little bit.
  • Adjust the toe stop to a height that is comfortable to you.
  • Make sure the trucks are secured firmly to the roller skate.

Post-skate Checklist

Every time you act on that urge to skate, check a few things afterwards.

  • Have the wheels of your roller skates become loose? If so, be sure to tighten them to avoid it being dangerous.
  • If you rolled through a puddle or spilled drink, check to see if your bearings are wet afterwards. They WILL rust if left alone. Dry the skates with a rag and clean any muck accumulated with rubbing alcohol.

Additional Skate Maintenance

  • If your ride isn’t as smooth as it was, it’s is time to check the bearings. It might just need a little added lubrication.
  • Take your skates apart and clean them. This means removing the bearings, because if you are using dish soap it can damage them. So, clean the skate and once it is dry replace the bearings.
  • If those are a smelling a little funky, odors can be removed. Sprinkle some baking soda inside the skates and leave the insole out in the sun to dry out. This should eliminate the smell.

If you pay attention to the care of your roller skates, they can last for years to come. If you are looking to give your freshly maintained skates a spin, come visit us in the rink!

Skating Through Time: A History of the Sport of Roller Skating

May 27, 2016 by Zach Sanders Leave a Comment

Not many people consider this when they go enjoy their favorite roller sport, but almost three roller sportscenturies of history and constant tinkering occurred to bring us to where we are today with modern skates. You may be curious as to how all of this got its start, and what pivotal moments happened along the way, but two centuries is a lot to sort through. Here’s a brief synopsis of the evolution of roller skating and the competitive branches it has!

Roller Skating Timeline

  • 1743: This is the first-ever recorded account of anyone using anything like roller skates. These first skates were used in a London stage performance, and the inventor is unknown.
  • 1760: The first roller skates are invented! Though the first account was in the stage performance, this is the first-ever actual invention of what we know today. These skates were actually inline, believe it or not, and had small metal wheels. The inventor’s name was John Joseph Merlin.
  • 1819: First patented roller skate design, in France by M. Petitbled. These skates are more similar to what we know today. It was very difficult to maneuver in this early design, and was difficult to do much else but move in a straight line.
  • 1863: The quad roller skate makes its first appearance. This model of roller skate made it easier for the skater to turn.
  • 1902: The Chicago Coliseum opens a public skating rink, and more than 7,000 people attend the grand opening.
  • 1935: (Roller Derby)- Sports promoter, Leo Seltzer, looking for attractions to fill the Chicago Coliseum, created the Transcontinental Roller Derby, an endurance race featuring a team of one man and one woman, roller skating on a banked track. The sport was modeled after dance marathons and bike races, popular in the 30s.
  • 1940 (Inline Hockey): The Roller Skating Rink Operators Association (RSROA) published a set of roller hockey rules drawn from a booklet by the NHL which was designed to grow interest in the playing of hockey on roller skates, not just ice.
  • 1950’s (Inline Speed Skating) – When wheels are involved, people want to go as fast as they can. They also want to race their friends. Sometime around this time period is when inline speed skating came about.
