Quad Skates or Inline Skates? That is the Question

July 24, 2015 by Zach Sanders Leave a Comment

Roller skatesSome people like one, and some people like the other, but neither are better. Quad skates and inline skates are just two different experiences that depend on what you are looking for! Both skates operate in a similar manner and the basics are the same, but there are subtle things that make each skate their own. No matter your preference, Skate Moore, in Moore, Oklahoma, welcomes all skates on our rink floors! If you are having trouble deciding which one is right for you, check out the major differences below and enjoy!

Quad Skate

  • The quad skate is typically the one used in the rink.
  • Need a little more stability? This is the skate for you! The way the 4 wheels are situated on the skate makes for a wider grip on the ground.
  • Is cruising your thing? Quad skate are not built for the speed that an inline skate is. So if jamming around the rink is what your after, then look no further than quad skates.
  • If your ankles need a little more support during physical activity, the quad may not offer what you need.

Inline Skate

  • If you feel the need for speed, inline skates might be what you need! Inline skate are used in speed competitions because of their more stream-line design.
  • If you are the kind of person who needs to feel the sun on your face, inline skates are better suited for outdoor fun. they are great for roller hockey and skating on a bumpier surface.
  • Need support for your ankles? Inline skates are made of plastic that comes up higher on your leg than a quad skate does.
  • While inline skates are easy to get the hang of if you practice enough, they do tend to be a little less stable than a quad skate. If stability is something you need, inlines might not be for you.

If you are in the market for a new pair of skates be sure to visit our Proshop and we will get you set up with a pair!

Roller Sports and the Olympic Event Struggle

July 10, 2015 by Zach Sanders Leave a Comment

olympic rings

It was announced in June that roller sports were among the eight contenders vying for a spot as a new event in the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics. This is exciting news considering ice skating has dominated the attention of fans for as long as many of us can remember. If you visit Skate Moore on a regular basis, you are no stranger to the world of roller skating, but the world of roller sports may be a little foreign to you. So, what is it? Roller sports are governed by the Federation Internationale de Roller Sports (FIRS), and include (but not limited to) roller hockey, roller figure skating, speed skating and roller derby.

In order to fully understand all that roller sports encompasses, we need to explore each of its disciplines.

What are these disciplines?

  • Rink and inline hockey – This type of hockey follows many of the same ideas as ice hockey, just on roller skates.
  • Roller figure skating – This is very similar to traditional figure skating on ice. It has the same premise; individuals, or teams, compete in a show of artistic dance and choreographed displays of skill. Judges then score you based on form, neatness and creativity.
  • Speed skating – Like the name says, the name of the game here is to be the fastest skater.
  • Roller derby – This is a contact sport in which two teams consisting of five members skate around a track in the same direction. Matches are won by having a designated “jammer” lap members of the other team. The other 4 members of each team attempt to hinder each others jammer in the process.

Skates Not Fitting Quite Right?

June 19, 2015 by Zach Sanders Leave a Comment

Improperly fitting roller skates can be extremely frustrating, and if you are a beginner it can bend that learning curve even more than it already was. But a skate that doesn’t fit quite right, doesn’t always mean that you selected the wrong size for your foot. While this is a very definite possibility, you may also just need to simply adjust the laces.  Like skates, feet come in all different shapes and sizes, and sometimes minor tweaks need to be made. Skate Moore in Moore, Oklahoma wan’t to see everyone in our rink having nothing less than a great time! So, follow these lacing tips if you are someone who is struggling with this.

  • High Arches? If you have really high arches that cause the tops of your feet to be raised a little higher than most, relieve that pressure. Roller skates are supposed to be a little snug, but not uncomfortable.
  • Is your heel slipping? If this is you, and you have been fitted for skates by someone who is knowledgable, try a lacing technique that will help alleviate this issue.
  • Toe problems? Let’s raise them up a bit! This particular lacing method will help to alleviate hammer toes, toe corn, nail problems and any other painful toes issues you might experience with your toes.

Roller Skating: It Isn’t Just for Skating

May 1, 2015 by Zach Sanders Leave a Comment

Roller Hockey

When we think of roller skating, we think of, well, roller skating. There isn’t many things we can think of that top gliding across a smooth wooden rink on a pair of skate, but there is more to do on eight wheels than you may think! In fact, there are many different games that can be played while roller skating. Who knew that skating could get any better?? Skate Moore, in Moore, Oklahoma, has listed some games to play to make your roller skating experience even better!

Roller Skating Games

  • Roller Tag – This is played exactly like regular tag, but everything is made better with a pair of roller skates. This is a really fun way to turn your skating experience up a few notches!
  • Musical Chairs on Skates – We all remember playing musical chairs as kids, but not many of us tried it on skates! Much like traditional musical chairs, but in the skating version there are marked areas on the ground instead of chairs that show where to claim a spot.
  • Roller Hockey – Take away the ice and ice skates, and replace it with pavement or a wood floor and roller skates! Roller hockey is a great way for hockey lovers to play at any time they want, without having to make their way to an ice rink.
  • Limbo – How low can you go? If you have mastered the art of limbo, crank up the difficulty a bit and throw on some skates.

A Brief History of Roller Skating

April 24, 2015 by Zach Sanders Leave a Comment

Early Roller Skaters

Roller skating has been around for longer than most people think. It’s roots date all the way back to the 1700’s! With such a rich and long history, it can be hard to remember all of the highlights, from its origins to now. That’s why Skate Moore, located in Moore, Oklahoma, has created an easy to follow timeline for you roller skating history buffs.

Roller Skating Timeline:

  • 1743: This is the first ever recorded account of anyone using anything like roller skates. These first skates were used in a London stage performance, and the inventor is unknown.
  • 1760: The first roller skates are invented! Though the first account was in the stage performance, this is the first ever actual invention of what we know today. These skates were actually inline, believe it or not, and had small metal wheels. The inventor was John Joseph Merlin.
  • 1819: First patented roller skate design, in France by M. Petitbled. These skates are more similar to what we know today. It was very difficult to maneuver in this early design, and was difficult to do much else but move in a straight line.
  • 1857: Roller skating has finally gained enough popularity by this point and has warranted the opening of the first public rinks! They were held at The Strand in London and Floral Hall.
  • 1863: The quad roller skate makes its first appearance. Designed by James Leonard Plimpton in New York City, this model of roller skate made it easier for the skater to turn.
  • 1880: Roller skates are beginning to be mass produced in America, and is experiencing a boom in popularity.
  • 1902: The Chicago Coliseum opens a public skating rink, and more than 7,000 people attend the grand opening.
  • 1916: The first appearance of roller skates on the big screen is in the Charlie Chaplain film, “The Rink.”
  • 1979: Scott Olson and Brennan Olson set out to redesign the skate by using a 1960’s inline skate design and using modern materials and an ice hockey boot. Scott Olson begins promoting the skate, and creates Rollerblade, Inc.
  • Adjustments to the skates are made over the course of the next decades, and with a bit of tweaking and honing, we have arrived at what we have today!

Roller Skating: A Way to Earn Money for Your Child’s School

April 17, 2015 by Zach Sanders Leave a Comment

Open Book

Skating is, of course, one of the funnest things we could ever think of! Week after week we see so many face rolling through our doors to have a great time, but to also get some really great exercise (recommended by the American Heart Association). Fun and exercise are not usually two words that belong in the same sentence, so how could roller skating be beneficial in any other way? Well, with the Healthy Lifestyle Skating Program, roller skating can also be really great for your child’s education!

What is the Healthy Lifestyle Skating Program?

  • This program, which is promoted by the Roller Skating Association, is a way for your elementary school student to raise money for their school just by hitting the rink! From 2013-2014 we raised over $5,100 for OKC schools.

How it works?

  • Contact us, and sign up your school (We will need the number of students for all schools that participate).
  • We will provide you with custom flyers and posters with your school name and all of the skate dates.
  • It will only be a small fee of $3 to skate with the HLS Skating Program. It is held on:
    • Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 6-9pm
    • Thursdays from  7-9pm
  • The child can bring friends and family with them, and each additional person is worth $1 for the school, and still only pay the $3 fee! The more the merrier, because the more people you bring the more money your school receives!
  • Your school should make announcements of when the events are being held. The more people are aware, the more money the school will receive.

We will mail a check to your organization the day after your Skate Night with all the money you earned! The school is not responsible for the children or any monetary amount for this program.
